About MOSAAIC at New York
Who We Are
The Multiethnic Observational Study in American Asian and Pacific Islander Communities (MOSAAIC) is a new health research project. MOSAAIC New York is one of five centers in the United States to take part in the first-ever national cohort focused on heart health, diabetes, lung health, and mental health in Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.
NYU Langone Health is one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers. It realizes its mission – to serve, teach, and discover– through an integrated academic culture devoted to excellence in patient care, education, and research.
Jiyoung Ahn, PhD, RD - Principal Investigator (contact PI)

Role: Professor and Associate Director, Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center
Profile: https://med.nyu.edu/faculty/jiyoung-ahn
Dr. Ahn is a molecular epidemiologist whose work focuses on the human microbiome, human genomics, and omics biomarkers for chronic disease prevention. She has a particular interest in understanding how socio-environmental factors influence biological factors that lead to chronic disease and affect health in Asian American communities. In addition to MOSAAIC study, Dr. Ahn is the Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded FAMiLI Cohort, an Asian American-enriched, multi-ethnic cohort of 130,000 participants for prospective follow-up. She received her Ph.D. from Cornell University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute.
Yu Chen, MPH, PhD - Principal Investigator

Role: Professor of Population Health
Profile: https://med.nyu.edu/faculty/yu-chen
Dr. Chen is a chronic disease epidemiologist focusing on how host and environmental factors are related to preclinical and clinical endpoints of cardiovascular disease and cancer. She has been investigated the cardiovascular effects of arsenic exposure in the Health Effects of Arsenic Longitudinal Study (HEALS) in Bangladesh for the past 25 years. She is involved in the Asia Cohort Consortium (ACC) and National Cancer Institute (NCI) cohort consortium. She is also the PI of the NYU Women’s Health Study, a cohort of 14,000 women followed up since 1985.
Richard Hayes, DDS, MPH, PhD - Co-Investigator

Role: Professor of Population Health
Profile: https://med.nyu.edu/faculty/richard-b-hayes
Dr. Hayes is trained in dentistry and epidemiology and has more than 30 years of experience in designing and carrying out epidemiologic investigations. He is experienced in large-scale cohort study management in diverse cultural settings and has included research in the United States, Europe, and Asia. His research includes investigation of environmental, behavioral, genetic, and microbial determinants of cancer and other chronic diseases.
Stella Yi, MPH, PhD - Co-Investigator

Role: Associate Professor of Population Health
Profile: https://med.nyu.edu/faculty/stella-s-yi
Dr. Yi is a cardiovascular disease epidemiologist, and her work focuses on community, clinical and policy-based initiatives for the reduction of chronic disease morbidity and mortality. She has particular interest in improving cardiometabolic health and lifestyle behaviors, including physical activity and nutrition in Asian American communities. Prior to joining faculty at NYU Langone Health, Dr. Yi worked for six years at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where she evaluated nutrition policies and community-based initiatives to reduce the burden of chronic disease. She received her MPH from the Yale School of Public Health and PhD from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Lan Ðoàn, MPH, PhD - Co-Investigator

Role: Assistant Professor of Population Health
Profile: https://med.nyu.edu/faculty/lan-doan
Dr. Ðoàn is a social epidemiologist with expertise in conducting community-based participatory research (CBPR) working with minoritized racial and ethnic, low-income and immigrant communities. Her work focuses on cardiovascular disease and psychosocial factors, including quality of life and depression, among older Asian American and immigrant communities, and how neighborhood environments impact health over the lifetime. She received her MPH from Touro University California and PhD in Health Promotion and Heath Behavior with a minor in Biological Data Science from Oregon State University.
Jonathan Newman, MD, MPH - Co-Investigator

Role: Associate Professor of Medicine
Dr. Newman is a physician–scientist who specializes in cardiovascular medicine, focusing on precision medicine and understanding the impacts of environmental and lifestyle factors on heart disease. His clinical experience shapes his research, which includes exploring why certain patients develop heart disease complications while others do not. He is a co-investigator on the ISCHEMIA study, aiming to prevent disease progression through medical and lifestyle strategies. His practice involves patient consultation, echocardiography, and cardiac rehabilitation to promote lifestyle changes and personalized treatments to mitigate heart disease risks.
Communities We Focus On
Our site is focusing on Chinese, Indian (Asian), and Korean American adults who reside in the New York City metropolitan area, but we welcome individuals from other Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities to also join the study.
